Piezo ELectricity

I heard about piezo electricity being used to get the required power... Can someone tell me how exactly it can be obtained?? When a piezo crystal is touched, does it produce an impulse? If yes, then how can an impulse be used to charge something? If no, then what is the type of voltage produced when the crystal oscillates...please help...
