Hi all,

How is job market for VLSI Engineers in Canada.

canada job market poor

Where in Canada? If looking in Toronto, your main option is ATI, and they don't pay as well as in the states. You could try a smaller firm like Snowbush consulting, but pretty much ATI is your best bet.

In Ottawa, it's pretty bad. Some nortel people are still looking for jobs there.

how is the job market in nmontreal nowadays?

Well, you can check also Gennum in Toronto or Ottawa, ST, Chipworks in Ottawa too. But in general it is not rosy.
What about Vancouver?

best job market in canada right now

Hi,

Do you guys have any suggestions for companies in Montreal? Nowadays, new positions are starting to open up again it's still quite hard. I am looking for a good company where I can do an internship.

I work here at LSI Logic in Waterloo , Ontario. They have VLSI positions doing video codecs.

how about the analog circuit design?

Re: Job Market in Canada

Canada is not too rosy for VLSI/ASIC design engineers. Besides ATI in Toronto, there are handful others like Genesis microchip, RIM (Reserch in Motion) and 2-3 others but not hiring much. Ottawa is likewise with much more smaller companies there.

Montreal has Matrox Graphics (almost barely surviving in the tough graphics market).

Vancouver has PLC-Sierra and maybe 2 others. Not hiring.

Your better bet is either California /US or Bangalore India.

Re: Job Market in Canada

for analog design try cambridge ontario companies COMDEV (these people are hiring like mad right now), Rockwell, or ATS (?) in kitchener. in toronto GTA look into aerospace market such as MD Robotics (they were hiring like mad last year).

i get the feeling that job opportunities for junior are non-existant, so hopefully you will be the 1 out of 10 that they need for high level system architect stuff, as everything else is (or is getting) out sourced.

ps. ATI is low pay with very high turn over rate. MD Robotics is the same, but atleast you can learn a lot here. ASIC is also non-existant in canada (am i wrong?)

good luck, and keep us posted!

Re: Job Market in Canada

So, what choice stands up for ASIC Engineers in Canada?

What about verification guys? What languagies are usually used (OpenVera/Specman/SystemVerilog)?

What about the FPGA Engineer positions?

Job Market in Canada

Re: Job Market in Canada

it is a great pity canada job market is so harsh. I just want to know which city is more suitable to land, ottawa or toronto for ASIC design engineer with 5 year expericnece

Job Market in Canada

Stay where you are. The job market here is too poor. This is a trap for hundreds of thousands highly qualified unemployed immigrants.

Re: Job Market in Canada

Hello. :D

I concur.

If you're doing FPGA in Toronto, try Altera Toronto, but be aware of the mean interviewer(s).

But the job market overall is pretty harsh.

asic design eng. positions left canada a long time ago. stay where you are and hope for the best
