As far as hardware is concerned there are a number of semiconductor manufacturers that have microcontrollers with built in CAN controller e.g Microchip,Philips,St microelectronics.

I have got code for simple CAN communication between two PIC18F4580 microcontrollers. If u need it, i can post it for u.
