hw ADC IC works?

Hi,
May i knw hw ADC works? what is the usage of the Vref? if 8 bits resolution mean? if i hv an Vref of 2.5V... n d voltage value i would like to measure is 0.5v n 5V ... what will be the digital ouput from the ADC ? thx

hw ADC IC works?

Vref usually its the max. Voltage that the DAC could convert, 8 bits means 256 "levels"(2^8), and the resolution should be: Vref/256; in the case of Vref= 2.5 Volts, 0.5 would be represented by aproximately 51 in binary "00110011".
