I want to know if there are any opportunities in IC design areas in New Zealand?

integrated circuit design jobs, new zealand

Is there any IC manufacturer in NZ?? I have tried searching the internet for engineering jobs in NZ but mostly programming jobs and power electronics. I am thinking of taking my chances next year in NZ once I get year experience in programming.

maybe I need to move to NZ next year, but I didn't find any job opportunity of IC design in NZ. Also I never heard anybody working in NZ in IC area. Maybe there are some chance in programming. So i am wondering if i go to NZ, what can i do there?

Damn, forgot to log-in!!

I was in NZ early this year. I have kiwi friend in NZ and he told me to check seek.co.nz and some other sites. I managed to get an interview with a company but in the wrong field (i.e. power) but I was specialised in digital and don't have much knowledge of SMPS or power. I handed my CV to other recruitment agencies but they require you to be there to attend an interview but by that time I have already left NZ. From what I seen from the new zealand website that my friend gave me, there were mostly software jobs but some listing of RF, power, FPGA design work. If you try the new zealand .gov website, you can actually check on the skill shortage and the immigration.

thanks eziggurat.
My friend got an offer from an agriculture research company this year. seems you are right-- quite some software jobs there. he will go to do software. but seems the electrical engineering industry is not so big there.

BTW, what is kiwi friend. I saw a lot of place say NZ is kiwi country. what does that mean?

taking my electronics to new zealand

Don't dare to work for Tait Electronics in New Zealand!!

I had a signed working contract with Tait Electronics from New Zealand 2 years ago, and these villains (I wish them to burn in hell) violated it in a criminal manner. I have lost a lot of money in this poor experience and worst of all alomost lost my job in my homeland as well! My luck is that I didn't give a notice to my employer. I didn't get any compensation from that damned kiwis not to mention any apology. Suiting them isn't worth because in the best case the compensation you get would cover the court expenses. They can be suited only in their damned country where the law is by their side (they of course bribe the judge, lawyers etc).

I was asking for help from anyone I could and reached out even to their minister of labour. Tait are what is called an "Accredited Employer", that means that they can bring people from abroad to work for them. They gain this right from the NZIS (Their immigration department), which is exactly like a rubber signature. It doesn't bother to supervise about these so called accredited employers, and when a person faces a problem they ignore him and throw him to the dogs.

Don't make the mistake that I did!

i want to job in newzealand

Hi,
I'm a New Zealand resident.
You won't find many IC Design jobs here, but there are plenty of electronics design, computer science and computer programming/admin jobs available.
Particularly in the main centers Auckland (1/4 of the population lives there), Wellington (capital), Christchurch (South Island centre). The North Island is probably where you will find tech jobs.
NZ excels in farming / dairy / plant technology.

Good luck,
Arron

what is "electronics design" job?

new zealand chip design industry

If you are working in the area of electronics design (RF, a little bit of FPGA/DSP, digital circuit...), Tait Electronics in Christchurch (radio comm gear), Navman largely in Auckland (GPS/ marine electronics) are the biggest ones. They have about 100-200 engineer/ software developer each. If you are more onto the power electronics side, check out "Fisher and Paykel" (whiteware). The rest are small to tiny shops.

All claim to be desperate for people. But, your mileage may vary... I am not really that sure if the advertisements are genuine. Is that a bargaining chip to force the government on some policy? I don't know...

A couple of my friends are with one of companies mentioned above. Both of them are top fresh graduates in their year. The company employs them on 3 month short contracts. They are now one year after graduate and still has not secured a permanent position. I have also gone through an interview with them for a specialist position, which is closely related to my research. They threw a couple of fairly junior guys to interview me (one would be one rank lower than me if I got employed, the other was the "deputy" team leader who can't authorise for the acutal employment decision. ) During the 1-hour interview, they asked nothing about my research nor the advertised position, but kept on sidetracking on something completely unrelated. Say, my speicalist research area is smart antenna and had done a 2week design project on toy car motor-controller in my second year. The interviewers spent at least 40 mins on the nitty-gritty of the goddamned remote control toy car and started nailing down to the "hobbyist details" on the mechanical design (brakes, acceleration and such). When concluding the interview, they asked if I wanted to know more about anything. I asked which type of algorithms do they actually want to investigate for their new product.... Then, we spent the next 5 min to talk about something related. It sounds pretty unprofessional to me...

Anyway, the position is still open -- 4 months after my interview, according to the newspaper. I give up playing the crazy game with those guys.... and have just got a job offer somewhere in Britain....
