Hi,

Can anybody tell me challenges involved in design, fabrication, testing of High temperature range chips. I found that high temperature range chips (-55 degC to 150degC temp. range) are quite costly ( more than >10 times ) as compared to their industrial versions. Why cost of these chips high? Is it because of lesser yeild or higher testing cost ..

not only, the case/packages is others, & eventually needs other passivations too...

also possibly screening and burn in. Chips that cover the military temperature range are often intended for military products and so are handled accordingly. It is possible that the yield is lower - it depends on the chip design. Chips I have designed for high temperature ranges have the same yield as those for low temperature ranges. Some may fail at burn-in.

By military/space projects you must be (pro type/version extra) on the "QPL" list (Qualified Parts Listing), all single costs more as 100K$ to qualify!, as Keith says too, its a lot of plus cost in gaim + less market volumen...

The high-rel chips are tested at all three temps. Commercial
often enough does not test more than one temp with the rest
handled by correlation. Hermetic packages cost 100X or more,
what a stamped leadframe and a squirt of molding plastic
do. The list goes on; every element of the part is specified
to be "best" and somebody has to foot the bill.

Hi-rel parts also have a whole raft of high manual effort
"Group" testing and per-unit inspections that add to cost.
Then you have the limited sources of supply, which lets the
manufactures who -are- willing to play, price a lot higher
than in a wide-open, high volume, cost-competitive market.

All of this has not a thing to do with whether the circuit
itself is high temp capable (150C is not high, it's only just
toasty warm).
