help with wireless robot

can you make a wireless controlled robot without microcontroller..with just remote control transmitter, reciever, stepper motors and battery.
like the one here...Remote Control Robot Tutorial - YouTube ....the motor directions are also being controlled in the video it seems.

if it is possible what are the advantages of using microcontrollers??
(sorry if the questions are too naive, im only new to robotics)
 

It is possible, you just need transmitter and receiver. It is just like your remote control car
