HELP regarding project on electronic voting machhine

i am looking forward to start a new project ...... i:e electronic voting machine...
can any one guide me from where i should start its hardware portion ....

What have you done so far? What method are you going to use to mark the votes?

well the project is till now only in mind and paper.
i am thinking of to have coding which set one thing that once i had pressed the vote button......... it make the system enable that is no more voting is allowed till it is reset it is to avoid the multiple voting by a single person......

i hope we can do this.....
