help on fan regulator

Hi,
I am doing a project in which i am going to control speed of the fan using PIC24FJ128GA010 micro controller. I tried a few circuits but didn't work. Can you people suggest me a solution, preferably using an opto coupler and thyristor.

Power source, fan type and specs? Requirements? Details of circuit you tried nad doesn't work? Any other relevant information?
