i have to use a three phase current sensor for my project purpose.
i would like to know what are all current sensors i can use for my project purpose except Current Trnsformer. Can any one send links regarding them.

thanx in advance..

Hello akhileshchidare,

The kind of sensor you can use will hardly depends of your necessities...

Current transformer sensors can be used only in AC current signals, once that de transformer core nedd to reset at some time to avoid saturadion.

If your current has a DC level, only a Hall Effect sensor or a Shunt resistor can be used. In general, the hall effect sensors are very expensive, and are only recommended if really needed. Its advantage is the natural isolation capability.

A shunt resistor is a resistor with very low resistence (to do not make effect on the circuit). The voltage readed from it can be amplified with low cost circuits. This king of current sensing is the natural choice always that it can be used. Some useful ICs to read the Shunt voltage, with interesting features, can be purchased from Texas Instruments, what has free samples available. See the exemple below:

Another important issue about current sensors is the necessary frequency bandwidth. If you need only to measure 50/60Hz currents it is not a problem, but to high frequency signals the measured result can be very different than the actual current waveform. So it is necessary to check the bandwidth that you sensor is able to read.
