i need help to understand how to dynamically adjust the number of taps of linear equalisers operating in unknown channel conditions

I knew one methods as following:
1st randomly send out;
then the RX feedback the result;
TX adjust;
You can refer Carriecom IDU.

what i carriecom IDU?...
 

Carriecom is a company whose products are IDU(Indorr Unit) for micorwave point-to-point telecomm.
