Help me with a project on MSP430 as a controller

actual hardware (device_unknown) do not match

greetings
i'm a newbie
i've got this project in college, it requires me to use MSP430 as the controller but the project theme is free. the problem is i don't know anything about it.
what i'm trying to ask is what do i need to start and where can i get it. is it possible to get the software required for the development for free, cause i'm kinda tight budgeted.

Assembler is for free.
See TI site for development tools and software. There you also can find code samples and etc.

i have problem with the IAR embedded workbench and TI MSP-FET430PIF FET emulator. i'm trying to debug my code but the IAR keep showing me this message :

FATAL ERROR
unknown exception in driver (#SD1)

session aborted!

can anybody help me please??

i've skipped the problem above... maybe... it got something to do with the project option or something. i've tried to create a new project and it worked just fine.

but the problem didn't stop there... a warning box showed up...

Chosen derivative (MSP430F147) and actual hardware (Device_unknown) do not match.

that is weird, because the uC i used is the MSP430F147 and every JTAG connection between FET and my device is correct. and the IAR setting was set according to the TI FET guide.
if i force to OK, IAR will report

FATAL ERROR
Failed to write memory at 0x8000

Session aborted!

i presume it was related with the Device_unknown report.

can anybody please help me.....
i'll click helped me button if anybody can.

i think you have someting wrong in your jtag port
