Help LM386 Amplifier Circuit

I am trying to construct this amplifier circuit with an LM386 Chip. Can anyone tell me if they see any errors? I cannot get it to work.
 

I'm trying to amplify an mp3.
 

Then from post #2 circuit remove left part all up to C2 and VR1. Input will be on C2 positive. VR1 set on highest value of resistance, then when you turn on adjust VR1.

Check batteries.

Check common ground.

Replace LM386.
