Is it necessary to ground the solar panels installed on the roof and if the same is must what gauge of wire should be used,thanks

Yes, it is recommended. More safer.

Also look into a:
* static discharger
* static arrestor
* spark trap
* spark arrestor

If you have a lightning rod installed, at a higher elevation, nearby, it can protect objects at a lower height.
