Getting Higher DC voltages after rectification than input AC voltages

I am making a variable power supply, but i have encountered a problem that i m getting 48 V DC after rectification of 36V AC. As i need 10 amp current and i read from some where that 1000uf/amp capacitor is recommended so i have total capacitance of 7000uf, is this the capacitance that is causing this abnormal behaviour? I havnt any circuitry to discharge this capacitance, Plz help me guys..

no no this is not problem.
capacitor is hold's Vp of sine wave that's why it shows 48v.
when you will connect your load with 48v . these voltages will demp.
so dont worry about it.

but after regulation are still higher than i expact. i am using lm723 as regulator

is the 48 volt off load exceeding the LM 723 ratings?, I seem to remember its 37V

..i havent said i m getting 48V after regulation, these are after rectification.

yes that exactly what I mean. The LM723 takes 37V in from the rectifiers and regulates it by dropping it down to what you require.
