The system only has two stable states, at rest at one or other ends of the cradle, so what are we meant to achieve?

The feedback system can keep the ball on the center. I once saw a talk by Prof. Cannon of Stanford and Caltech about the vertical pendulum which is similar to this.

How they can get the position of the ball?
I want to build it with simple parts

thanks nebisman

You can use optical means to determine the ball position. The problem Prof. Cannon had was the hysteresis in the setup using low cost material. This ruined the stability.

Sorry flatulent, hysteresis in what?
Bye

Did this program build by Matlab ? why dont you share your Matlab file wih us ?

The entire mechanical structure had linear and rotational parts that were not perfectly matched in their connections. The minute slop in the fittings caused problems.

Who can recommend more resource on this subject? Currently, I am doing a project on inverted pendulum, but i am totally new in this area.
