free falling detection using accelerometer in no time

I want to detect free falling of an object using accelerometer ADXL345 in no time so that I can protect my device using some protection hardware. So can anybody help me to write a code to do this.

What kind of a system are you making and how will you be using the accelerometer?Please give more details.

The device has a programmable "free fall" detection feature. The datasheet suggests to set the filter time to 100 ms or above (100 ms is corresponding to 5 cm free fall travel, as you can easily calculate). Looks like a blueprint.
