firmware USB for AVR: which one is better and easier to use

I've seen the following implementations of firmware USB:

I want to ask which one is easier to use for USB communication with AVR microcontroller. I've programmed in asm and C, but I dont know much about USB iinterfacing. Especially in the second implementation, the use of the USB driver implemented in firmware is not clear.
A simple barebone program that shows how to setup the transmit/receiver buffers and the steps for a simple transfer is welcome.
