How to compute the filter bank coefficients?

I have a filter bank with a series of bandpass filters. I want to compute the filter bank coefficients. How to do that?

In one resource, it was given as sum of the bandpass signal. What does that mean? I compute the sum of each sample in the waveform output from each band?? Won't the sum be almost zero in every instance because my wave would have values both above and below the zero line?

I thought that the energy of each band could be considered as the filter bank coefficient. Which one is right?

Please help...
