can anyone explain the principle of ring modulator

it uses diodes to generate a square carrier rather than sinusouidal ones .

Here's the operating/service manual for a classic old HP 10514A/B mixer. The Theory of Operation section (page 12) describes the diode ring modulator.

ring mogulator uses 4 diodes just like bridge rectifier. it just operates as a switching. such that 2 diodes ON for +ve half cycle and other 2 for -ve half.
