at91sam7x ethernet

I'm working on an application with an Atmel AT91SAM7X doing ethernet. I'm using FreeRTOS on a Make Controller Kit that I got as a demoboard. I'm looking to build a custom board that can run some of the same code.

My question is, can any PHY be used to connect to the micro? The Davicom DM9161AE that is on the demoboard isn't stocked at my regular part supplier, so I was wondering if I could replace it with another brand/type. But I don't want to have to rewrite any drivers if I can help it.

Without having to compare a lot of datasheets, can someone help suggest how this part selection is done and what stuff would be compatible?
