what does equivalent gate count mean????

can any one eloberate it.............
 

The equivalent gate count means ,what ever design u have that consists of mux,flops etc .If we convert that design into basic gates then whats the total no of gates taken.

Could you please give as some formula to estimate the number of gates count and if possible the area and comsumption ?

equivalent gate count is same as no. of polysilicons which crosses diffusions
