Is this a new method?

And what do you think about the application about EMD? Is this a new area for resaerch or it's an old method an used?

Empirical mode decomposition (EMD) is a signal processing technique for analysing any signal to a number of amplitude and frequency modulated functions. Although it was discovered about 10 years ago, it has recently received much attention due to its successful application in many fields such as signal enhancement, pitch detection, nonlinear wave analysis, earthquake engineering, non-destructive testing, economic data analysis, e.t.c.

1- I didn't understand the word '' Empirical '' , can you explain it to me? what's an empirical method

2- and the application that i'm looking for is about the extension 2D methods of empirical modal decomposition (EMD) and application to the analysis of aerodynamic and aeroacoustic fields.
