Hello,
My computer recently broke, and so I have a new computer. I am trying to get Eagle Pro (which I purchased on 13 nov 2012) to work on my new computer. However, every time I try to open a schematic , or a layout file, or a library file, it says "invalid data".
Do you know how I can handle this situation?
I went HELP > EAGLE LICENCE, and Browsed to the folder where I have put the licence key (the licence key that Cadsoft gave me when I first purchased Eagle) , and I also put in the "Installation code" that Cadsoft sent me when I bought Eagle, but this doesn't seem to do any good.

Do you know how I can use Eagle Pro on this new computer?

Can you save a [new] file and then re-open it?

Yes I can do that. I am now using windows 8 and im wondering if the files , which were made on windows 7, aren't compatible, even though they are eagle files?

I suggest you contact Cadsoft or try their forum. I have never had problems switching operating systems and versions so cannot help. The only thing Eagle is very poor at when switching is backward compatibility. If you open an old file with a new version and save it then you will never be able to open it with the old version again.

Windows 7 and 8 are basically the same. You may have a permissions problem on the older files. Try opening one with a text editor or some other file editor just to see if will allow your login account to open it. It will probably be gibberish but it should open without error. Another possibility is that the files are actually corrupt. You did say your old computer broke so it may have done something to the files when it broke.

hello
thanks for all advice...iteventually worked when I downloaded it from website (eagle)....the version 5.11.0 mustn't have liked me or something

to be honest, I cant remember which version it was, and the computer broke, so I couldn't go and see...so I just installed the ver 5.11.0 that I found on a usb backup disk. I though it was an up to date back up disk but obviously not. My apologies, the computer suddenly breaking threw me off line here.

Sounds like you were on V6 then - trying to load them with V5xx would fail. It is a PITA and one of the reasons why I am still running 5.11.0 - some of my customers are running Eagle but if I upgrade I have to persuade them to, or use the old version for their work and the new version for other customers. It would cause plenty of problems so without a compelling reason to upgrade I will be staying with the old version for quite a while, I think.

Thanks that's interesting, I hadn't realised, it didn't occur till I just read your post...it seems strange that they're not doing backward compatibility......I mean 5.11.0 isn't that old either....I didnt think twice about loading it in...it was eagle, it was reasonably recent, so I thought would be ok.

just to add - you will get the same problem with libraries (although I haven't tested that recently). Open an old library either the new version and save it and you won't be able to open it with the old version again.

Usually this only happens with major revisions eg from V4 to V5, but it has happened mid version as well in the past.
