Now I have A4988 stepper driver with a rating of 2 A. Can I take its output into a transistor for power amplification to drive a higher ampere stepper motor ( 8 A) ?

I do not see any reason why that cannot be done.

It can be done, with proper device selection.

You are now using a base current of 2A to produce a collector/emitter current of 8A.

This must be taken from the output of A4988.
