Does anyone know what type of memory that use in MP3 player or iPOD?

They all are fitted with embedded flash memories ..

If you are asking about the file storage format, it really varies. Some flash based players use a FAT16 format just like a hard drive. Others, especially older ones, often use a proprietary format that is unique to that manufacturer. This is why the MP3 player can write an removeable flash card, but when you take the flash card to a separate PC based card reader it appears blank or full of gibberish. The PC based card reader is expected FAT16.
There was about a year ago, a project to transform the $20 AVR Butterfly into an MP3 player with an MMC card and an external board that had the MP3 decoder. Search the web or www.avrfreaks.net and you will find it.

Most MP3 player are using NAND flash, mainly Samsung's or Hynix's, including some iPOD. This is classified as Flash MP3 player

Macrodriver and 1.8" HDD are used in larger MP3 player, larger in both size and capacity.. And they are named HDD MP3 player.

The advanced of Flash MP3 player is that it could have a longer play time, as Flash no machanical moving part while accessing the memory, such that less power will be used.

HDD MP3 player's advantage is that, HDD is still cost effective, when comparing the cost per byte... But as mentioned, it consume much power... that has shorter play time..
