DMA problems in RH7.3

Dear Guys,

I have installed a dual-processor based machine, which is composed of
dual Xeon 2.8GHz 533MHz FSB with HT.

After I installed RH7.3, I use "hdparm" to enable hard disk DMA.
But I was told that HDIO_SET_DMA failed.

However, this problem would not occur on my AMD XP3200 machine.
Have anybody encountered this problem like me?

Re: DMA problems in RH7.3

Most likely your problem is related to the kernel that is on the RH 7.3 I suspect 2.4.9 or lower. The IDE does not work as expected. I also had problem that started with a DVD-W and later discovered that data transfer between 2 HDD master/slave was incredibly slow.
Solution that worked for me was to install a distribution with a newer kernel. And yes I also had 2 dual Xeon configuration on a Tyan MOBO.

Re: DMA problems in RH7.3

The kernel in my distribution is 2.4.18-3, which is said to support IDE DMA.

I found all the rpm kernels in the redhat official site cannot correctly configure my IDE. Only if I download the patch files from Intel and compile again the kernel, the DMA can be enabled.

The IDE controller is intel 6300esb, which is the enhanced derivative from Intel ICH5.
