difference between rs232 and rs485

Difference between RS232 & RS485/488

rs232 rs485 difference

RS232
full duplex
point to point
short distance(1 meter) at 115kbaud
at least 3 wires (more with handshake control)

RS485
half duplex
point to multi-point (master to multiple slaves)
1200 m distance at 115kbaud
2 wire (RS422 uses 4 wires)

Added after 29 seconds:

different between rs232 and rs485

adding to what klystron said , RS485 line is differential but RS232 is not,and this is why RS485 can be used for longer distances.

RS232
-Unbalanced / non-differential (all same terms)
- point to point
-No. of Drivers = 1
-No.of receivers =1
-full duplex (so it can be half duplex also)
-Distance (Standard) = 15m
- receiver input sensitivity( a valid signal) = +-3V
- Max speed at 12m = 20kbps

RS485
- Balanced. differential
- No.Drivers = 32
- No.of Receivers = 32
- multipoint
- Half duplex
- Distance (standard) = 1200m
- receiver input sensitivity( a valid signal) = +-200mV
- Max speed at 12m = 35Mbps
