hi anybody could help me what is the different between rs232 max232 and max3232. i want to make a data cable DLR-3P to connect a nokia phone to the pc but the discription for the DLR-3p is using max3232, unfortunately i can't find a max3232 in my place. so can i replace it with a max 232
You can replace Max3232 with Max232 (1µF + caps), or Max202 (0.1µF caps) or any other chip rthat is RS-232 driver and has and has 232 in its description, for example: ST232CN, ICL232, ADM232 etc..
The main difference between 3232 and 232 is the supply voltage (first 3-5.5, second 5V) and max speed ..
For your application there should be no differencies (if you have +5V power supply). MAX3232 is a new version of MAX232. It can work from 3.3V to 5V. It is faster (up to 1Mbit), low-power and has ESD protection. That's all. Check corresponding pages on Maxim-IC site:

MAX3232 can take from 3.3V to 5V, so it stronly depends on his schematic.
But I just checked DLR-3P schematic and you are right - he needs MAX3232 (or others 3.3V powered tranceivers). MAX232 will simply not work from 3.3V.
Instead of using any MAX nnn you can build a small circuit as per attached drawing.
It "steals" power from the RS-232 port and translates levels to 3.3V ..
By the way, the MAX3232 is manufactured by TI too, and the last one, available from Digi-Key is much cheaper. Does anybody compared parst from MAXIM and TI in real application?
Max3232 is SMD Version and 3,3V vorking, but XX232 series IC is 3,3V not work, and big DIP socket IC.
So Com port supply RS232 interface appl is 3232 good solving, but com port via P.S xx232 not stability or don't vork
Sincerely.
