Diff between PLC's and microcontrollers

Can any Programmable Logic Controllers and the microcontrollers. They both looks like they can do the same function in almost same way. Also I have a problem with a word-Application Specific Integrated Circuits. I haven't heard this term. How these will work. Can help help me in this matter plz...

Well, there are some simularities, but there are lots of historical and practicle differences. PLC's evolved out of early indusstral controls. There are certain things that are implied with a PLC: latency input/response time, isolations of inputs, ect. Also the languages that a PLC is expected to understand also reflect it origin. Languages such as ladder, or sequence charts ect.
