What is the difference between a mask layer and a drawn layer in an
IC layout? Why do layout designers usually only specify drawn layers?

i think Drawn layers are the layers drawn by the layout designer which usually follows the DRC rules, while the mask layers can contain some yield options like OPC or whatever

Please correct me if I am wrong, but I gues sthere is no difference between the two.
Its just two different terminologies being followed at two different levels of abstraction.
For eg, a layout designer will call it as a drawn layer while a fab guy would call them as mask layers

drawn layer ...drawn by layout engineer to identify in certain device before fabrication

hi ,

you can refer to LAYOUT DESIGN TEXT BOOK.

also search on edacafe.com:idea:

thanx.....

Mask layer is made by factory and base on drawn layer.
Drawn layer doing some logical operation will generate mask layer.
