Hello,

In designing an SMPS, we need to ensure that the feedback loop can be closed to give a stable output voltage.

This is done by finding the open loop transfer function…

-The open loop transfer function consists of the modulator transfer function multiplied by the error amplifier transfer function.

Do SMPS design engineers derive these transfer functions themselves ?
….or do they simply use the transfer functions as provided in books ?

you are speaking about a design on paper. in most cases, the paper design has huge simplifying assumptions so that it is possible to create transfer function using the human mind. with such simplifications so your circuit, yes, a book will have the answers. here you derive the transfer function from its basic functionality and can also convert this to "state space" model if there is an advantage.

a good book on the subject is Fundamentals of Power Electronics 2nd ED by Erickson

this is a good first step to see stable steady-state operation and to meet some dynamic performance. once you are happy.. transfer the design to PSpice and start getting closer to your real world operation.
