nyquist theorem

D = 2 BW log(2) K

My question is if you have a typical DSP application where you have a sensor that measure information in continuous analog waveforms and you need to digitize the data to be displayed in digital format......what part of this system defines what the BW is? Is the BW defined from a circuit in the front stage of the system that does the filtering or amplification of the analog signal??
