DC to AC conversion using "npnp inverter"

dc to ac conversion

Suppose I have a DC signal, and i want to make an AC signal.

Some one told me to google "npnp inverter". I've not yet found the answer.
I am sure some one on this board knows what he is talking about, right? =)
 

They are probably referring to a thyristor used in a bridge configuration. For a introduction to the thyristor, check out

Silicon controlled rectifier (SCR) is a trade name for a particular type of thyristor manufactured by GE in the 1950s. Sometimes the terms SCR and thyristor are used interchangeably.

To make an inverter, you can also use BJTs or MOSFETs depending on how much current, voltage you are intending to handle. There are plenty of H-bridges that are used to drive motors for example.
