Convert LCD module EA DIP204 to EA DIP203

Good day...would like to ask if anyone have experience changing the LCD module EA DIP204 to EA DIP203? Specs wise every pins are compatible except the pin2 VDD (204 is 5V and 203 is 3.3V). We have tried our best but we can't make it work. Only the LCD turns on but there's no characters been shown. Any inputs are much appreciated. By the way, we lifted the pin2 and connected to 3.3V separate power supply, both power supplies ground we shorted but not helping.

Hi,

the most important that I found out is the VEE difference:
* 204: 1.57V, 700uA
* 203: 2.48V, 820uA

Here is the update...we've got some improvement now. But it doesn't show some characters. Maybe I could double check other hardware and the atmel program IC. Will keep you posted...thanks
