Is there a catalog or reference available somewhere, which lists the part number AND device type? I find it very tedious, when looking for a device that meets certain requirements. For instance, I am looking for a N-channel JFET with a pinch-off of -9V, Id>400mA etc. I suppose I could type all these parameters into Google and hope for the best, but it would be allot easier if a reference exists that could list some basic parameters for quick reference.

If you want to cover several manufacturers at once, some of the best ones are at the distributors e.g. https://uk.farnell.com/

They aren't perfect, and may not have all the parameters you want listed, but they can give you a starting point. So, for Jfets:

Thanks Keith, Farnell looks promising. I'll give them a try.

you can also give digikey or mouser a try; they have categories that you can click to find more specific specs for devices.
