I think you have already got some comprehensive replies. I was going to just apply my simplistic approach which is that fixing the grid and varying the cathode is not much different to fixing the cathode and varying the grid. The two main differences are the lower impedance of the cathode and that grounding the grid prevents Miller capacitance and so dramatically improves bandwidth.
