closed loop transfer function open loop

when we use gain/phase analyzer to look at the stability of a SMPS, why dont we just set it up to look at the closed loop transfer function?
...instead of always using it to look at the open loop transfer function.

This would be much easier as it would only need access to the output voltage terminals.

the open loop transfer function can then be derived from the closed loop transfer function by (my memory is baddening)

Closed loop transfer function = CLTF
Open loop transfer function = OLTF

and.....

CLTF = OLTF / (1 + OLTF)

(or something like that)
