classification of VLSI?maximum operating speed of FPGA.

anybody know the classification of components used in VLSI like fpga,cpld,...
i need to know the maximum operating range of FPGA. and the major differance between FPGA and ASIC. anybody please let me know.. i`m a fresher started with fpga.... thanks in advance
