Why do fabrication of diode in an IC consumes more space than a transistor?

Maybe this situation is due to the fact that the diodes must be designed for higher current

Every transistor contains at least one diode. So no, it doesn't.

But the diodes the foundry gives you to use in the PDK, is
another matter. Those embed design choices beyond what
lithography can do. For example a diode that must achieve
maximum breakdown and minimum leakage will be drawn a
lot differently than a MOSFET drain contact. Non self aligned
structures need more room for slop, higher voltages need
room for depletion spreading, etc.
