packet switched

hiii
actually the diff. is that

==>>in circuit switching the virtual circuit path is generated from source to estination router
==>>via the same path all the data flow from source to destination machine
==>>there is problem if any midway router fails the connection failes

and
==>> in packet switching the data is fragmented in small units called packets
there is no such path is generated
==>>the whole data(packets) flows through different paths to the destionation machine
==>>here there is no effect of router failure on data flow

i think this is enough to give the idea of ckt and pkt switching

u can refer the book on computer networking by TMH or by PHI publications

here you will find a good description:
http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/cisintwk/ito_doc/introwan.htm
Once you establish a circuit switched path, the networks reserves bandwith for your exclusive use. It is like a point to point link.
On the other side, in packet switching you share the resources of a packet network to get your data (fragmented into packets) to your destination.

hi ,
To put it simple.. if u wait for conn to be establised with the network and once its available u communicate that is circuit switched .

an entitre network is dedicated for that..

packet switched net is one where data is classified into packets and transmitted as burst with intervals.. Like packets..

thats all.

Circuit Switched Data:- Here the connection between a transmitter and a receiver is established first and thenn communication starts. This connection does not change in a given call or session. Example is a Telephone call.

Packet Switched Data:- Here the data is converted into packets. These pakcets are transmitted with the destination/receiver ad source/Transmitter address. The packets flow through different paths and reach the destination. In a givenn session packets can traverse through different paths and these paths are not fixed. Example is any IP based communication like internet.

The discussions above have clarified the concept a bit.
Now in regard to IP based communication, I've heard about different class of IP address, how is that assigned?

hi
ps is more common today, since its better in real timeapplication like voice and video

The only packet switched voice application usedtoday is Voice over IP e.g voice chatting in Yahoo/MSN messenger. Taday also mostly CS is used for voice communication.

real time applications demand for high QoS and high bandwidth which is very difficult to achieve in Ip based communications. That is why CS is perferred.

Yess, like Class A, B,C and D. class A,B, and C are assigned so for, and class D is not assigned and is subject of research..
it is implemented like this:
192.168.0.10 (IP ADDRESS)
255.255.255.0 (SUBNET MASK)

for more info, search web...

You Require a fixed BW for Circuit switched network whereas for Packet switched you do not require it.

Voice via Yahoo Messanger -- Packet switched
Voice via Landline Phone -- Circuit Switched

well,
here is another fifference:
circuit switched networks are always hungry for resources, complex to design & costy.

circuit switched networks are not complex to design compared to packet switched circuits..b/c packet switched circuits many much protocols..circuit switched network can be implemented on SS7 only..
rest of the poits are right..

i think it needs more hardware & equipments.
maybe,:?:

In circuit switching a physiacl connection is established between the source and the destination therefore there is wastege of resources as the channel remains idle when there is no transmission. in packet switching data is sent in bursts and the chaneel is available for others also if there is no transmission by the same tx
