I want to know one thing. Using a virtual machine we can run an operating system. but how does one install some software on it or save the file made in an emulated environment ? people who have worked on emulated environments kindly share your experiences on these.

thanks

Use the "Share Folder" feature provided with Vmware or Virtual PC. By using it, you can share a common folder between master OS and Guest OS. Thus, two OS can access the same file.

Re: unix on windows machine

You may use any of the various ways to have multiple OS's on one system.

1. Using VMware
A good option as VMware exists both for Linux and Windows.
You can directly browse the web in VMware if your system is connected to the web using bridged/NAT networking.
You can share the files with the host OS using
a. share folders (needs installtion of VMware tools)
b. an FTP server running either on the host of the guest (virtual) OS.
c. you amy also use your physcial driver for guest OS (not recommended)
The bad thing is that it would require a lot of system resources for running the guest OS relatively smoothly. Even then the speed of the applications in the guest OS is relatively slow.

2. Using Cygwin
Not as generic a solution as VMware. Although it is light and fast. The basic purpose of cygwin is to be able to run xNIX applications in windows environement.

3. BootManager to chose amond multiple OS's at boot-time
The best one if you don't require to use the two OS's simultaneously. One OS when running can normally acces the drives of the other OS.

4.
VirtualPC is just another tool like VMware.

Say we're using 'BootManager' to choose either one of the following OSes: WinXP and Linux. When we log into Linux, do you think we can access the files created in WinXP system? Thanks.

Of course you can acces the files that created in WinXP, the problem is the kind of partition type you have, I mean if you have NTFS partition ( the common case), you can read the files, but u can't write in that partition (WinXP could crash), but if u have a FAT partition there won't be any problem.

So I recommend to make a partition common to both OS (i mean FAT32 for example)

You can use exceed or x-win,and you could put the file into a network driver and let Windwos to access the network driver.
