Can we use functions in design ? if yes what will be the synthesized

I need to call CRC16 function every time when there is change is data can i use function for this or any other alternative ,because i heard that functions cannot be synthesized is it true the crc function is used in design so please help me

Each functional call will be synthesized as a separate combinational logic block.
