Dear All,

Is it possible to power can bus via only USB port, or do I need more power than that.

Kindest Regards,

FE

The can bus itself is carrying no power supply. A can bus controller/interface can be surely powered by USB, many products are
commercially availbale, e.g. from www.ixxat.com.

Check the data sheet for your transceiver and the min voltage coming through the USB. For example, the transceiver might need a min voltage of 5V -5% and the USB might deliver min. 5V -10%.
If you have such a combination, I would discourage you from doing it.
Otherwise, add up the max. currents of the devices on your target board, e.g. MCU, transceiver, LEDs...??
If these are below 100 mA, just go ahead, if they are between 100 mA and 500 mA, there is a way too. The specific procedure how to request the high power from USB, you would need to look up yourself.

Got the right pointers?
How about using a chip that offers both CAN and USB?
Check out evaluation boards from Keil and Olimex for the STM32 or LPX17xx, they are using USB to provide power to the board and they are using CAN as well.

Have fun, Bob
