BT656 -> why blanking is needed?

As for BT65Btvideo protocol -> why blanking (vertical as well as horizontal) is needed?

This digital video format reproduces the timing of an analog video frame, including the blanking periods.

In order to allow time for high voltage sawtooth to return to start of ramp in CRT's a blanking interval is necessary and is wasted in LCD's but retained for backward compatibility.
