If you require simple firmware simulator, most compilers have that feature.
However, if integration with hardware is needed, I agree with PROTEUS sugestion, despite some noticed bugs.
Proteus is best ! it can simulate ur code with the hardware also, and u can also use the "compim " feature where u would connect ur circuit and code on proteus to any hardaware /software connected to the com port! and thats really good!
i used that to simulate my code for the gsm modem! where i connected the gsm board to com port and my code and rest of circuitry on proteus ! ..
