battery charger rating in rms or dc current

Hello, my car battery charger says its "4 Amp" ....it's a "BasicCharge4"

however, when i read the small print it says that its 4 Amps rms and 2.7A DC.

Why are they stating the rms current ?

surely its just the DC that matters ?
 

You may want to measure the real charging current with an instrument anyway. It's in fact the DC (or mean) value that matters. RMS can be expected higher because of the additional ripple current. The latter value may be interesting for the dimensioning of cables or fuses and also the thermal load of smaller (e.g. motorcycle) batteries.
