mlp package

Curious any one got any luck to hand solder the MLP package? I am planning to use one, but better check before making a decision.

My friends told me they got lots of issue with the 5x5mm MLP CP210x package on both hand soldering and reflow with machine placement.

So on their second hardware release, they went to FT232R just for the package reason.

Also I was told, it would require x-ray device to check the assembly quality, just like the BGA and LGAs. Don't know if it is true.

Thanks,
Funny N.

I did. It's a very difficult task but it's possible: you'll need an air soldering station and a lot of patience. X-Ray is not necessary because you can visually inspect the soldering. Remember to put as little solder paste as possible.

I see, so just a solder iron won't work.

An air soldering station is definitely required, right?

How could you secure the quality?

You absolutely require an air soldering station.
Anyway, you can hand solder these devices only
for prototypes.
Someone has done this job with a small kitchen
oven used as a convection oven. I don't remember
the web link but you can try to use google to find it.
Regarding how to secure the quality, I cannot help you.
