Alphanumeric LCD with Chinese language. How?

Hello everyone!

Could anyone tell me how alphanumeric LCD (ex. like HD44780-based) can handle Chinese language? As far as I know, Chinese has some thousands hieroglyphs and I have no idea how 128 extended characters from ASCII table can handle it.
