What do we achieve with phased antenna array that we can't achieve with non-phased antenna array?

A phased array can sweep the beam very quickly. Using a mechanical gimbal to move an antenna, you are limited by the speed of the gimbal. With a phased array you are limited by the speed of the electronics.

Before any beam steering properties (or change in antenna pattern), a phased antenna array can provide better gain than a similar aperture non-phased antenna array.
